Milhaven was once a place of power shared by the native Dreamspeakers and their Uktena allies. However, in recent years, the major node that powers the twin Quintessence wells has begun to dry up. Each faction of Magi have taken the drain in different ways.

The Traditions called a council of Maine's most powerful remaining magi. The council decided that the Node needed to be allowed to recharge. In doing so, it appointed a representative from each Tradition to maintain a presence in the area, and declared it hazardous for too many more magi to remain in the area. Unfortunately, some unexplained phenomenon has caused the city to be shielded from the Avatar Winds, making it an ideal jumping point to the Umbra and attracting more magi then ever before. To make matters worse, a few magi have declared a personal war against other supernaturals in the area, accepting the rule of the Council (while totally ignoring its appointed representatives) and taking it even further.

The Technocracy has deemed it an environmental problem, caused by excessive reality deviants. It has beefed up its security and is currently staging active search-and-destroy campaigns. For the good of reality, the Pogrom must be enforced.

The Nephandi have made Milhaven their own personal Mardi Gras. Revelling in the dying node, the blasphemous magi have declared it an open party. At the moment, only a few covens are present, but that may change as more Nephandi are called by the increasing violence and perversion the covens have begun to spread through the city.

If the Marauders have even noticed the change, it only seems to make them more and more edgy.
